Subtle Embossed Background for Any Card

Adding a subtle embossed background to any card can give it that little extra something something. Today we’re going to learn how to do just that. It’s very simple and you can use just about any stamp you’d like. I’ll list a few ideas below for you too. As usual there’s a video to go along with my post linked below.

Before I get into this card, I have a quick story to share. I promise it’s super quick. I made this card right after Christmas thinking I’d share it January. Well, that never happened. So I’m sharing it now as an ode to Old Man Winter leaving…and soon. I’ve never been one for warmer weather but this year after all the rain and gloom we’ve had here in Central Virginia I’m actually ready for warmer weather. So, “Let It Snow” now because in a week or so I’m going to forbid it! 🙂

Subtle Embossed Background for Any Card

The one thing I think you really need to have when you create a subtle embossed background like this one, is a bunch of clear acrylic blocks. It’s super helpful to have several about the same size so you can put several stamps on the each block. It takes up less time and this technique is not something I’d attempt with a MISTI.

This technique will work with many different kinds of stamps. I happened to use snowflakes for this card. Smaller floral stamps, simple shapes, or even sentiment stamps work great to create a subtle embossed background. Think of the spring cards with all those little flower stamps. (I might have to try that myself!)

I think the thing that makes this particular technique so amazing is the embossing powder. Clear embossing powder is okay but the Silver Pearl Embossing powder just makes this clean and simple card really sing.

Simple Steps to Create a Subtle Embossed Background

1. Use an anti-static powder tool over the entire surface of the paper.
2. Stamp a section in clear sticky embossing powder. Don’t stamp the entire background all at once. The embossing ink might get slightly dry then you’ll have issues getting the embossing powder to stick.
3. Pour embossing powder over the part you’ve stamped. Don’t heat set it just yet.
4. Continue stamping images in sections and applying embossing powder until finished.
5. Melt the entire background panel all at once using a heat tool.
