This evening I came home from work and made a quick card for a friend at work: A Ranunculus Birthday.  Her mom’s birthday is next week and she wanted a special card for her.  When I make a card by request for someone I don’t know, I like to find out a little bit about the person I’m making the card for.  I ask questions like what’s their favorite color or hobbies or do they have a sense of whimsy.  Today my goal was soft colors and flowers.

A Ranunculus Birthday

First, I stamped my image Studio Katia “You’re So Ranunculus”, on watercolor paper.  Watercolor paper has texture so in order to make sure I was able to stamp my image clearly, I placed the stamp in my MISTI.  That enables me to stamp my image twice in Versamark ink.  Be sure to use your antistatic powder tool on the watercolor paper so no stray embossing powder sticks where it shouldn’t.  I poured Hero Arts Silver Pearl embossing powder so my flowers would have some delicate shine to them.

Next, I used Distress Oxide Inks to watercolor.  Just smoosh the ink pads onto a smooth non-porous surface and then you can dip a paintbrush into it.  I used a very loose style of watercoloring by dropping water inside each of the sections of the flowers then, bringing in each of the Distress Oxide Ink colors.  Distress Oxide inks mix well together so I used Worn Lipstick, Spiced Marmalade, Broken China, Cracked Pistachio, and Wilted Violet for the flowers.  I used Peeled Paint for the greenery.

Distress Oxide Inks have this beautifully muted yet super bright quality.  For more information about Distress Oxide inks, check out Understanding the Six Commonly Used Inks in Stamping.

I let that dry (helped along with a heat tool) then die cut the panel down with MFT’s Wonky Stitched Rectangles.

The sentiment

Honey Bee Stamps is the BEST for sentiment stamps and dies.  I die cut ‘happy’ from some light purple cardstock four times using the ‘Happiness Honey Cuts’ die set.  The key to stacking up delicate die cuts like this is to use a very strong but lightweight adhesive.  I’ve always used Zig Two Way Glue Pen but you can use whatever you have on hand.

‘Birthday’ is from the coordinating stamp set.  I stamped it in Versamark and used white embossing powder.  I heat set that, let it cool off and cut it down to a small rectangle.

The last thing was a scattering of sequins.  I make my own sequin mixes and purchase them from Cartwright’s Sequins.

Thank you for joining me today!  If you have a question, just drop me a line!  I’d love to hear from you!
