Use Scraps to Make Valentines Cards
Hello! Welcome to Jill Cameron Creations. Don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter over in the sidebar to get great card making tips and few surprises too! Today I’m creating two cards using scraps. I don’t know about you but, I have a box full of paper scraps and a bunch of mine is white cardstock.
All of the products used for this card are linked at the bottom of this post. You can watch the video for the card right here.
First, I trimmed down my cardstock pieces into strips a little over a 1/4″ and colored them with my Copic markers. I wanted reds and pinks for this first card. And using the leftover white scraps allowed me to create whatever color I wanted.
Next, I created the background for this card by using a heart stencil from Scrapbook.com and pink ink. I used a stitched heart die to cut out the center of the panel. Save that heart because we’re going to use it on our second card.
With the stenciled panel face down, I’m filling in the heart with the colored strips of cardstock. You can fill in the heart however you want to! I wanted a triangle shape in the middle and I wanted the strips to overlap a little bit so it looked like a tiny staircase. I’m not worried about it being perfect. I’m not worried about them being straight and I’m not worried about them being exactly the same distance apart. I really just had fun and enjoyed the process of creating this card.
Once I was done stacking all of the strips on the back of the heart, I used my paper trimmer to trim off the stuff hanging over the edge of the panel. You can use scissors too. Just be sure to glue close to the shape and not the edge of the panel so you can bend back the strips and cut them so the edges don’t show.
Next, I die cut the sentiment from dark black cardstock. It’s from Maker Forte. This black cardstock is a little heavier and is super duper black. Instead of cutting three and stacking them, I only have to cut two.
The ‘love’ sentiment that I’m using is from Concord & 9th. It is the ‘Sew in love’ set. It’s one of those stitching die sets, and it has the sentiment love in there. I’m also going to go ahead and add some foam tape to the back of the panel to pop it up from the card base. I’m did not put the foam tape over the strips of cardstock This is the low profile foam tape stripes I use a lot from Scrapbook.com.
To finish the first card, I added Nuvo Glitter Gloss to the die cut word and popped it up just a little bit in the middle of the heart. And finally, I covered the sentiment in Glossy Accents to make it look like a puffy sticker!
Now, I’m going to create a card with heart I cut out from the first card. I pulled out some different colors of cardstock for this one and trimmed strips to about the same size as before. You can use varying sizes if you wanted to.
I knew I wanted these to be the background from my heart so I cut two each of the different colors and one gold. That gold is a little wider than the other strips. It goes in the middle.
Then I popped the heart with foam tape and popped on that same sentiment.
Some different ways to use strips on your cards…
Fill the entire heart (or other shape) with strips at the same angle
Alternate the layers around the shape so they stack on top of each other at the edges for a different look
Use rainbow colors
Use various widths of cardstock strips.
Now, I have a question for you! How do you sort and store your scraps? I need a better way to sort and store mine because right now they are just thrown into a bin and never get touched again. Drop your suggestions in the comments section.
One of my goals for this year to use as much as I can of what I have on hand. Yes, I’ll still get new stuff for specific projects but I’m going to be using older stamp sets and die sets as much as possible. And to use up some of these paper scraps! If I don’t know what’s here I can’t use it. And I’m one of those people of out of sight, it’s out of mind.
