How to CASE Any Card & Make it Your Own
Hey hey! Today we’re talking about how to CASE a card and make it your own. This can be a controversial topic in the crafting community so let’s just get started with what exactly does CASE mean and how do you do it without upsetting the apple cart.
Watch this video to see how these cards were created and the creative process for CASEing these cards from our inspiration piece. Also, the supplies used are linked at the bottom of this post.
The term CASE started out as Copy and Share Everything. I’m pretty sure it was coined in demonstrator circles to make it easier to create cards for workshops. The term has kind of transformed over the years into Create and Share Everything. It’s a term generally used to mean to copy a card or scrapbook page.
There are some creators that do not want their cards copied at all and they are pretty vocal about it. Here’s a good rule of thumb about this kind of situation: if you’re making a card to send to someone and you’re not sharing it on social media, then make the card however you want by whatever inspires you. If you’re sharing the card on social media and you were inspired by someone specifically, then be sure to share what inspired you. Do I care if you copy my cards? Nope.
So, how do you get inspired by a card without copying it? Here’s a few things to replicate to give you the same feel without being exactly the same:
- Colors – do you like the colors used on the card?
- Design/layout – do you like how the card is designed?
- Key element – what’s one thing that stands out to you?
There were a few things about our inspiration card above that caught my eye. The first was the colors. I love the pinks and greys and white. Also, the diamond inside of the square. I knew I had the stamps and dies that I could make something similar but not exactly. Usually, what draws us to a card design we like is that we have that stamp set and are looking for ideas. Right?
I used the same colors for all three cards but created three very different cards. I used a diamond stamp for the background in one card. For the next card, I swapped out the stamp set for a different floral bunch.
Adding a pop of black to each card gave each of them a bit more depth.
This last card is nothing like the first two but instead is inspired by the colors and the diamond pattern. I turned it into a slimline card. But I would have never put those colors together without the inspiration from our inspiration card.
