Multilayer Card + CTD528
Every once in a while I participate in the Color Throwdown Challenge. This week I’m creating a multilayer card using the CTD prompt. Not sure what the Color Throwdown Challenge is? It is a website for cardmakers to get a color prompt every week and well, make a card. There’s a design team that all takes turns being the hostess. You can link your card and share it on social media to the site. It’s pretty darn cool! The link is in the first line.

Multilayer Card Tips & Tricks
Okay, so when I’m making a multilayer card (a card with lots of dimension) I don’t worry about if it’ll fit in an envelope. I either make an envelope or put it in a larger envelope. Also, I don’t like to add any additional embellishments. There’s so much already going on with a multilayer card that adding more stuff is going to take away from the overall effect instead of adding to it. For this card I added some Aqua Shimmer Pen and that’s it.
When you are putting a multilayer card together, start by just laying everything out flat. Then you can either take a photo of the layout or you can use Press’ n Seal. You know the stuff you use in the kitchen. It’s just tacky enough to hold the pieces in place.
Check out this blog post by Jennifer McGuire on how to effectively use Press n’ Seal. The third option here is to just remember the layout and put it back together. HA! Which is what I did with this card because it was pretty simple.
There are different ways to add dimension for multilayer cards. There’s white fun foam, foam tape, foam squares, foam strips, and of course cardstock layers. Foam anything comes in various thicknesses. Scotch foam tape is what I generally use and it’s about 1/32″ thick. It’s a pretty dense foam tape that doesn’t give all that much. Some other foam tape products are thicker but less dense. Then there are some foam products that are super thin but still give a little dimension. It’s all about personal preference. I love that there are so many options.
The last thing I want to talk about for multilayered cards is making sure all of your elements are supported. In other words, make sure you put foam tape behind all the things that stick up. Add multiple layers of foam tape if you need it. The larget the element the more support it needs. So you’re adding dimension to an entire panel, use fun foam instead of foam tape. It’ll provide a more even height and it pops right back out when compressed.
This card was super fun to create and way outside of my usual color pallet. I love working outside the box. It stretches and grows me every time!
