Today we’re creating a card using a fun technique of smooshing. It’s an easy way to get a unique watercolor effect without all the work of watercolor. This is inspired by the Creative Watercolor class from Altenew as part of the Altenew Educators Certification Program.

Watch this video to see how to create this beautiful card. The products used are linked at the bottom of this post.

I love the look of watercolor but sometimes it can be a little more work than I want to do. The Creative Watercolor class gave me lots of ideas on how to get the look without the work. Smooshing is one of the techniques in the class and I love ink smooshing! It’s so fun and you never know how it’s going to turn out.

For ink smooshing you’ll need a media mat or a piece of acetate. You can use ink pad to smoosh ink or reinkers.

First, I stamped and white heat embossed the Mega Succulent stamp on watercolor paper.

Next, I smooshed green ink onto my media mat and sprayed it with a little mist of water. I wanted the green ink mostly around the outer edge of the panel so that’s where I started. Just mash your watercolor panel into the ink at the edge. I like to drag it little bit so that I’ll get ink in the corners of the embossing.

I repeated this with the other two colors bending my watercolor paper to get color in various areas of the panel. Be sure to clean your mat or acetate between each color so you don’t mix colors on your ink pads or make mud with your colors.

Once I was done smooshing ink, I sprayed the entire panel with a little bit of water and then pulled the excess water off with a paper towel.

If you plan on trimming your panel with a paper trimmer or a die, make sure it is 100% dry before cutting. I did die cut my panel with a stitched rectangle frame.

Finally, I added a sentiment strip with foam tape. This card didn’t need anything else. I hope you enjoyed this fun and simple card.
